Question : Windows 2003 Domain controller on a backup server Backup Exec 12.5

Hi, I want to know the following: I have a physical Windows Server 2003 server, named SERVER-PHY. I also have a VMware server with a couple of VM's on it. One of those is a domain controller, named SERVER-VM. I want to install a second Domain Controller. I plan to to this on the SERVER-PHY. But I also want to use this server as a bakup server with Backup-Exec 12.5 on it.
I also have a second physical server, which is used as a Management server (Virtual Center Server etc). I can also install the Domain Controller functions on that server.

Which server is best suited for the domain controller function?

Thank you

Answer : Windows 2003 Domain controller on a backup server Backup Exec 12.5

I often find that if you are going to have a VM DC you should also have a physical one just in case. If you are going to leave the VM DC as the PDC and have it contain all the FSMO roles you will not have any issues having your BDC (physical server) be your backup server as well.

Keep in mind that you may get some replication errors in your logs here and there while backups are going but there really should not be any real issues with having your backups be done on your backup domain controller if, again, no FSMO roles are on it either.
