Question : Windows XP does not automatically install usb devices

hi all,

weird one this, when I plug in a usb device (hard drive, usb flash drive, external dvdrw) the item shows up as unknown device in device manager. I can then click on update driver and get windows to install and it then works.

I reboot and plug in the device and I have to go through the same thing again.

I have tried uninstalling the usb drivers and the same thing happened they were detected as unknown device and had to be manually installed.

So Windows has all the drivers it needs, it just isn't bothering to look for them, any suggestions
