What type of settings in a database and the column type in a table should we specify such that a particular field could store the chars in multi-language (eg. English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese...)

Answer : Unicode Support on SQL 2005

no, however the locals must be installed.

Techniclly speaking you should declare the collation of the field, however SQL has become cleaver enoght to figure it out.
