Question : Convert from VMWare to Hyper-V

Currently we are using VMWare Server 2.0 to host 4 VM's. The server is a Intel Quad core with 8gigs of RAM, and 4 sata drives running raid 5. The server is hosting a File, print, application, and DC servers.

We are looking to move to Hyper-V R2 since now it now is matching up to ESX. We understand we can move to ESXi, but we would like to keep with Microsofts products.

The question we have is has anyone converted from vmware to hyper-v, and if so how did you go about it? This server is also in production, and we do not have another 64bit server that we could use to run Hyper-V. So we will need to move all VM's to another location, convert them somehow, wipe the server, install hyper-v, then restore the vm's to hyper-v.

Were open to ideas.

Answer : Convert from VMWare to Hyper-V

Let me answer your question a little further on the third paragraph.

Yes i have done a conversion from vmware to hyper-v. It works very smoothly and you should not have any problems. It is best to do the conversion while the source is offline.

what you will need to do is setup a server (probably the one you have VMM server on) as a hyper-v server.

You will convert on your servers to hyper-v to this box using vmm 2008. Once completed and you have tested the vms to make sure they work correctly. Create a backup of your vmware images and hyper-v servers. Format the vmware server and install hyper-v. I would highly recommend server core edition. the use VMM 2008 to migrate the VMMS to the new hyper-v server. the entire process should take about 10-14 hours of your time. assuming you have a build a vmm2008 server
