Question : Promoting and demoting domain controller

Hi
I have a new server and I want it to take over as DC from an old long suffering PC.

Its W2003 network and the domain controller stopped behaving properly recently (it is a pentium 2 450).

I want the new server to join the existing domain and then take over as DC.

What is the procedure for doing this?

Wing

Answer : Promoting and demoting domain controller

Promote it to a domain controller - run DCPROMO and follow instructions.  NOTE: if the new server is Server 2003 R2 and you DO NOT have a Server 2003 R2 domain controller already, you'll need to run ADPREP from the second CD on the existing DC to prepare Active Directory for the new server.  This is ONLY REQUIRED if your new server is running a newer version of windows than your newest DC.
