Question : How do I fix system restore so that it functions correctly?
I lost all the icons in my start menu along with all my saved logins I had for all my web sites that I visit that require a login. This happened after a ms update for windows defender. I then did the following:
I selected a system restore point to roll back to and started the process and received the following messages.
1. system restore initializing.
2.Restoring registry.
3. Restore complete.
At this point the computer shut down, restarted and booted to the desktop, and I got the following messages.
1. System restore did not complete successfully.
2. your computer systems files and settings were not changed.
3.. An unspecified error occured during system restore.
It suggested I try a different restore point and I did with the exact same results. How do I fix system restore so that it works properly? Help please, thank you.
I am running vista sp2 on a dell xps m1710 laptop with 2GB memory.

Navigate to My Computer>Local Drive C:>Windows folder>Inf Folder.
Find SR.INF, right click on it, and select Install. This should repair the System restore.
