Question : Mailbox management Process in Exchange

What is this "Start/Stop Mailbox Management Process" in Exchange system manager under the servers folder?
I tried to start it but nothing happens so I stopped it. So as usual today I sync my PDA phone to my computer and sync failed. Error is something has changed in your server etc2. What is this Mailbox management process anyway? Is this the reason why my sync failed?
