Question : Need to use multiple types of page numbering in document

I have a 27 page word 2007 document that needs page numbering but cannot seem to figure out how to do it.

1.  On the first page there is no page number
2.  On the second and third page I need the numbers i and ii (Roman numbering)
3.  On the fourth page to the end of the doc I need Arabic numbering starting with the number 1

I have tried page and section breaks but it does not seem to be working.  Have a feeling that I am doing something incorrect.  Help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer : Need to use multiple types of page numbering in document

Sorry Mark, I can't really do it for you. I just modified your document to illustrate how you could go about doing it yourself. This is the sort of work I do for my freelance living work; the E-E support stuff I do falls into the "pro bono publico" side of things, and I need to be careful to keep it balanced.

" You can create whatever header/footer you need by editing within the header/footer panes: if you need the page number to be upper right, put it in the page header for that section. If the number needs to be at the outside edge of the page (i.e. an even number in top left; odd in top right), then be sure to set the Page Setup's Layout Header/Footer options to define "Different odd and even", and define both the odd and even page headers.

" A page number field set anywhere on the page -- whether within a header or footer or within the body content -- is displayed according to the page number format defined for the section.

" Roman vs Arabic numbering schemes are managed by the Page Number Format dialog.

" To modify the generated table of contents format, you will need to alter the style definitions for the built-in TOC styles ( TOC 1, TOC 2, etc.).

Good luck on your Word course. Be sure that the syllabus includes a good background and focus on styles and field codes: unfortunately, many courses just gloss over the topics, and miss key elements of how to use Word effectively. Personally, I would include styles in a basic course -- but I know I would likely be just a voice in the wilderness on that stance...
