Perhaps you are reconnecting to an old session without a shell?
In that case you'll just see the desktop color and no windows on top of it - try going fullscreen, starting task manager (ctrl-shift-escape) and logging out of the session (perhaps even better to have an administrator log you out forcefully)...
This happens sometimes when TS starts an application after logon, but does not end the session correctly after the application closes.
