Question : Sony Vaio PCG-531A - Can the OS be upgraded on this notebook??

Hello,

I have a customer that has a Sony Vaio PCG-531A notebook that came with Windows ME on it and wants to upgrade the OS.

He told me that he attempted to upgrade it to Windows XP Pro and got a message about the BIOS not handling XP for some reason.  I had this computer about 2-3 months ago and for some reason I was able then to find something that the BIOS in this computer is unable to accept commands properly from the XP operating system.  I have the computer again and cannot find the info I found before.

Wanting to put this computer on his work domain, he then bought Windows 2000 Professional and asked me to install it.  When I started the install, everything went well until the hardware compatability.  There were multiple listings to do with I/O and ports (serial and LPT).  Normally I work these out with driver updates, but Sony seems to have forgot they made this laptop based on searches on their website for info.

This reminded me that I think what I had read before about the BIOS was that if you install XP on this machine, the operating system doesn't know how to send commands or jobs to the printer, or serial ports.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this notebook and whether you can or cannot upgrade beyond Windows ME?

Thanks in advance,

Loral Johnson
