Question : How do I restore system from Windows 7 backup?

My hd crashed. I had backed up the system image  ( 30 gb ) using windows 7 to a hd on a network computer. I installed new hd and reinstalled windows 7. When I went to restore backup I select the backup file on the network  and get a pop up screen saying windows can not find any backup sets.  I tried to copy the backup from the network computer to the new hd but windows won,t let me. It is a read only file . I tried removing the hd from the network computer and used an usb to ide adapter on the newer computer but I am unable to accces the data. I am trying not to install everything from scratch. Is there anything that can be done to avoid this?

I doubt that anything else than partition image could be 30GB of size. The author simply misnamed what he did.
jfxr56, was the image taken this way: Backup and Restore - create image of system partition?
If yes then create System Recovery Partition with the same Backup and Recovery Tool. Then boot from it the PC and perform restore from USB drive.
