It seems your soundcard has problems.
Quoting from http://www.edgeworld.com/notebook/i7sound.htm:
"You may want to test the sound on the system. First, let's make sure the audio controller works. Boot to the Dell Diagnostics Diskette and choose to run specific tests. Arrow down to the AUDIO test, hit the spacebar to select it, and then go to the RUN menu. Choose to Run Selected, and the audio test will start. If this fails, then the audio controller has died and needs to be replaced. If it passes, then we are still looking at a software problem. Dell/Brian McCullough, Webtalk"
Do you still have that Dell Diagnostics Diskette?
If you do, use it as mentioned above.

To check the volume levels on your system, perform the following steps:
1) Try hitting Fn-PgUp to raise the speaker volume, and also toggle the speakers on and off using Fn-End.
2) Check the volume control next to the system clock (the yellow speaker icon). Double click it and make sure all the volumes are up and unmuted. You may also want to click on 'Options' and then Properties to make sure there aren't any volumes you may have missed.
3) If you have an Inspiron 7000, then also make sure that the volume dial is up all the way as well. It is located underneath the audio mini-jacks.
See if any of these help.
