Question : TCP/IP Send/Recieve Files

I've spent the last few days scouring the net but have yet to find a decent guide to getting a client/server file transfer.
I'm basically looking for basic example to build from for sending and recieving files of various types over the internet or a network.
Could someone please point me in the direction of some decent documentation/guides for doing so, as well as maybe giving me a better idea as to what i'm looking for.
