Question : Unable to Install Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition

Hi,

Just built a new computer about 2 weeks ago.  Windows XP Pro x64 is installed.  All windows updates have been installed.  Haven't had a problem installing any other programs so far.

For whatever reason, I am not able to install the following products:

- Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition
- Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition

I have tried to install them 2 different ways:

1. Downloading the VWD2008 Install file from http://www.microsoft.com/express/vwd/.  When I run the executable, the installer starts up, and then I get the error saying:

Visual C++ Runtime Pre-requisites could not be downloaded.

And some other error messages pop up saying:

2. Using the Microsoft Web Platform Installer - I have tried using this method 2-3 times.  Each time I get the error: "We sorry, the following products have failed to install" and then it list the above 2 products.  Also it provides an error log which contains the following:
