Question : Backup and restore of Win2k Server to a different machine

I want to do a complete restore of a server running Windows 2000 Server with SQL server to a different computer. This computer is the only server on the network and is the domain controller.  I would like to do this using the native Windows backup program.  Can this be done?  And what are the possible problems?  I have a backup copy of the individual SQL database that I want to restore, which I will use to restore the database after the initial restoration of the server.

Answer : Backup and restore of Win2k Server to a different machine

Full server backup copy would be viable solution only for the system where the backup was made. Trying to "clone" system by restoring full system backup copy on new system will lead to disastrous results.Period.
( Have you ever tried just to move hard-disk with fully functional Windows 2000 to other machine?? No you've not. I tried that -just for testing purposes- and I'll tell you it's almost impossible. I can imagine endless series of error messages you would get after doing full system backup restoration on the "cloned" machine pertaining to inadequate hardware configuration settings retreived from Windows Registry compiled on original machine). I other words cloning, replicating or mirroring techique is "no go!"

If acctually want to make a backup copy for OFF SITE storing you might be better to backup SQL server data which can be restored on other (new) server.
