Question : Hyper-V Licensing

I am looking to figure out the pricing on Hyper-V to compare it to Vmware.  If I am going to get two servers and a SAN and use shared storage and I want "vmotion" and high availability with Hyper-V, what do I need?  I keep reading on Microsoft's site that Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is free and it includes both of these features and then I see costs associated with everything.  What do I need to do this right as far as licensing?

Answer : Hyper-V Licensing

The Microsoft licensing page for SCVMM is very confusing, even to people familiar with SCVMM and Hyper-V.

The short answer is no, you don't need anything else license-wise to manage VM's on up to 5 Hyper-V hosts with Workgroup Edition.

The longer answer is;

Workgroup edition can manage 5 host servers and manage unlimited OSE's on those 5 hosts. To go beyond 5 hosts you'll need to purchase another instance of Workgroup edition (will need to run parallel to your first instance) or migrate to the Enterprise edition.
