Question : Cannot Open Very Large Word Document

A coworker has created a huge (500 MB) word document containing primarily images.  The document has become so unwieldly that only a handful of images will open.  An error message is then displayed advising that there is not memory or disk space to either print or display pictures.

The document does not totally freeze but we are unable to edit it.  If possible we would like to split up the document into several smaller files.

Thanks for any assistance that you can provide.

Answer : Cannot Open Very Large Word Document

Well, you could try saving it as an HTLM format file to get disconnected image files, then reassembling it with INSERTPICTURE field codes. If you can't do it as a single document, turn off the 'show pictures' option and split it into several chunks first. You may have to fiddle with the settings to get whatever image conversion works best for you; I haven't examined it very deeply.

Before you link them, and if the generated image files are still more than you need for display, you can reduce their size even more by using an image program to batch convert the files to suitable dimensions (many that come with a digital camera will likely do it).
