Question : Configuring site alias in SharePoint 2007

I have two SharePoint intranet sites on the same server, one on port 8181 and one on port 8080.  I want the users to be able to access the sites by typing in a simple name such as Intranet1 and Intranet2.  I created DNS CNAME records for each simple name and pointed them to the SharePoint server, I created AAM entries in SharePoint for each site simple name and added a Host Value Header for each intranet site.

Problem is, if I don't include the port number I get page under construction.  http://intranet doesn't work.  http://intranet:8080 does.

What am I missing here?

Okay, I think now is the time for some requisite screenshots.  Can you post some SS's of your AAMs and Host Header Values?  You can doctor them by replacing words, but keep the same structure so we can double-check.
