Question : Exchange Server 2003 SMTP Problems

I need to understand the best configuration for our companies.
We have 2 companies on 1 domain here and we use 1 Exchange Server 2003.

I currently have 3 SMTP Virtual Servers set up:
Default Virtual Server has an IP of (All Unassigned) on port 25. It has a FQDN of our_domain.local and uses our ADSL provider's SMTP server as a Smart Host. It uses anonymous authentication.
Company1 has an IP of X.X.X.5 on port 25. It has a FQDN of mail.company1.co.za and it uses our ADSL provider's SMTP server as a Smart Host. It uses basic authentication via one of the mailboxes as per our service provider.
Company2 has an IP of X.X.X.5 on port 587. it has a FQDN of mail.company2.co.za and it uses our ADSL provider's SMTP server as a Smart Host. It uses basic authentication via one of the mailboxes as per our service provider.

I currently have 3 connectors set up:
Connector 1 has Default Virtual Server as the bridgehead. It is set to forward all mail via our ADSL provider's SMTP server. The address space is set to * at a cost of 1.
Connector 2 has Company1 Virtual Server as the bridgehead. It is set to forward all mail via our ADSL provider's SMTP server. The address space is set to Company1.co.za at a cost of 1.
Connector 3 has Company2 Virtual Server as the bridgehead. It is set to forward all mail via our ADSL provider's SMTP server. The address space is set to Company2.co.za at a cost of 1.

Most of the other settings are pretty default or are understood and don't need to be addressed here.

Currently internal mail is fine, but outgoing is not being delivered.
What is wrong with this config and what is the best config for our setup?
