We had an old Compaq laptop running Win 3.1 or 3.11 - it crashed (badly), some years ago. I was told there was no way it could be revived. I took it apart and extracted the hard disk. Threw away the rest....
Now I'm trying to read the disk - need to get a few documents off it. Got hold of a cable to connect it to IDE on another PC. (This PC is running NT Wkstation, but I could use another running Win95). I can see what's on it - it shows that the disk was compressed (I didn't know that!) and contains the following files:
Directory of D:\ 09/30/93 06:20a 54,619 COMMAND.COM 10/02/96 07:44p 694 STACKER.LOG 11/27/96 07:46a 247 CONFIG._SB 03/16/97 07:49p 326 AUTOEXEC.BAT 03/16/97 07:24p 335 AUTOEXEC._SB 02/21/97 03:49p 335 CONFIG.SYS 12/04/95 12:00a 120,926 EMM386.EXE 12/04/95 12:00a 4,548 IFSHLP.SYS
Directory of D:\STACKER 11/28/91 05:22p 40,667 STACKER.COM 09/24/91 02:00a 29,090 SCHECK.EXE 11/28/91 05:22p 28,030 STACKER.XT 09/24/91 02:00a 18,843 SEDIT.EXE 09/24/91 02:00a 16,384 SSWAP.COM 09/24/91 02:00a 12,992 SCREATE.SYS 09/24/91 02:00a 864 SWAPMAP.COM
Directory of D:\ROOT 09/11/96 11:36a 96 CONFIG.SYS
plus these hidden files: Directory of D:\ 09/30/93 06:20a 40,566 IO.SYS 09/30/93 06:20a 38,138 MSDOS.SYS 10/02/96 07:45p 112,607,232 STACVOL.DSK 09/30/93 06:20a 64,246 DBLSPACE.BIN 01/28/98 09:39p 2,918,400 386SPART.PAR
Now, I realise that I can't just look inside of the STACVOL.DSK and read it. In Win_3, you had to load stuff using Config.sys to fool the system that it has another disk, and then call that C: and the boot disk something else.
Is there any way I can get my system to do that?
I've printed out some files from the laptop: Here is the config.sys: [menu] menuitem = Full menucolor = 0,7 menudefault = Full, 5 numlock = off [Full] DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK /SYNC DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DOS=HIGH FILES=50
Here is the config.sys from 'root': DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK /SYNC
Here is the autoexec.bat: @ECHO OFF LH /L:1,16944 C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100 LH /L:0;1,45456 /S C:\SMARTDRV.EXE 512 PROMPT $p$g PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\;C:\DOS;C:\BAT;C:\TOOLS; SET TEMP=C:\temp rem mode com2: 9600,n,8,1,p rem mode lpt1:=com2: LH /L:1,12928 mouse LH /L:1,1120 safety rem LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:DST_CD01 lh doskey ver w (I remember that the 'w' calls a batch file that calls windows).
I tried connecting the disk to the PC in place of the C: drive (using the jumper for Master) and it found the disk but came up with 'Operating system not found'. This might be because it's a Compaq disk..? (I've heard they format their boot sectors in a different way - is this true?) Or is it because the PC is running NT Workstation? I would have thought that it could have picked up any system from the boot sector.
I have a copy of Norton Disk Doctor available, if necessary, which I can use to examine the boot sector.
Can anyone offer any clues? Many thanks if you can. [Sorry I haven't a lot of points to offer - I will see if I can get some more.]
