It sounds to me as though you MAY have had a program installed that displays extended image information on the popup balloons (tool-tips). Depending on what other details you were used to seeing, some of it may be "EXIF" data and other settings contained within the image as metadata and extracted by a utility program. That metadata is written to an image by the digital camera it was taken by, and may be such things as Date Taken (as you mentioned), Camera Model, Lens Aperture, and possibly others.
I always turn off this kind of feature, but as far as I recall the standard details for an image taken on a cheap digital camera on mouseover are file name, dimensions, file type, and file size. It is the camera that adds the metadata, but if you use a utility program to automatically copy files from the camera on connection, that software can also write its own data to images.
Open Windows Explorer to a folder of image files and open the Tools menu > Options > "View" tab. Look through the options to show or hide details. I see a couple of related settings:
- Display file size information in folder tips.
- Show popup description for desktop and folder items.
If both of them are unticked, then tick them and click Apply, then click the "Apply to all folders" button and close the dialog with the OK button.
Close and reopen Windows Explorer.
Are the details you were used to seeing back to normal?
I hope it's as simple as that.
If not, then I would guess that you have some utility program that shows extended details of images. I had one installed a while back for this purpose, but I got fed up with the large balloon tool tips and removed it.
Let us know how you get on with the Folder Options settings.
