Question : Need help diagnosing Sharepoint hang.

We are using Windows Sharepoint Services as a document library for all client files. Occasionally when attempting to retrieve a client document (usually through on MS Office application such as Word or Excel) the system will hang. If we recognize the symptoms (the document is taking too long to open) we open task manager. Under the applications tab the first thing to go is the application (Word, Excel, etc) which shows "Not responding", then any windows explorer session shows "Not responding", eventually all programs become unresponsive.

The only solution we've found is to shut the machine down  using the power button, nothing else works. We can continue to open task manager but choosing shut down or restart does not work.

The problem seems to occur randomly, it has happened on every machine in the office, but having one machine encounter the problem does not seem to affect the others. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might be able to diagnose what's going on?

Answer : Need help diagnosing Sharepoint hang.

Please make sure you've installed this update on your workstations and hopefully that'll take care of the problem:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=17c36612-632e-4c04-9382-987622ed1d64&displaylang=en

It should have gotten installed automatically... so be sure that all Office 2003 installations are up-to-date with SP2.
