Question : New removable HDD not detected

Have purchased a new 300GB removable HDD but when I plug it into my machine, in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations, my machine does not recognise it as new hardware and therefore am unable to use it.
I am using a Vista Ultimate OS

There could be many things going on here.

Have you plugged it into another computer?

Does it work somewhere else? For all we know this HDD could be damaged....

Is it a USB HDD?

Have you tried plugging it into another USB port on the same computer?

What brand is it?

Have you called the manufacturer's tech support on this?
