I would set aside about 50Gb. 99 out of 100 application programs want to be installed in drive C and most of those will give you untold grief unless you submit to their viewpoint. It is not worth fighting. I have a Vista Virtual Machine doing basic things and it is now 30Gb in size. Windows 7 is lighter but not that much lighter.
