Question : Shutdown VM in ESXi 4.0 when connected to a smart ups 1000

Can you configure an automatic shutdown of a VM (sbs2008) running on a ESXi 4.0 host when a power failure occurs, and how ? Can you also shutdown the ESXi 4.0 host ?
We are using the free Esxi 4.0 version, running on a HP server with a serial port, and a APC Smart Ups 1000 with the supplied serial cable.

Can it be done using the supplied serial cable, or do we need to purchase additional items/software ?

Is this not working?  I had my sales rep send me the link a while back when were discussing network interfaces for our rack-mount UPS systems.

I was told the basics were compatibility of the OS with PCNS (PowerChute Network Shutdown), then buying the physical server license, which covered the VMs onboard.
