Question : Edit registry of XP on slave drive
|
|
The situation: Was ghosting a Drive(lets call it X) to drive(b) via usb external hard drive. Succeded and doing so, and decided to test (b) in the machine to see if it would work: Didn't!. Ended up editing the registry in (X) so that the mounted devices were switched around so that now b is x. Now B won't load and freezez.
I've taken the B and put it into another machine as a slave hoping to be able to edit the registry. How can you edit the registry of a slave hard drive with xp on it?
Thanks,
Jake Neufeld

Start regedit; highlight HKLM. In the File menu, choose "Load Hive". Browse to the system registry files; they're in the (former) %Systemroot%\system32\config folder. You probably want to edit the file "system", no extensions; this is the HKLM\System key. Open the file, when it asks for a name, name it "Temp" or whatever. You now have a new key "HKLM\Temp", under which the old registry settings can be found and edited. When you're done editing, highlight the "Temp" key, and choose "Unload Hive" from the file menu. Before you start editing, you might want to make a backup of the files you're changing; the regedit changes are valid immediately.
