Question : File System Error (-1073741701) When attempting to run or attempting to load Vista SP1

I am continually getting File System Error (-1073741701) since apparently when my Vista (home) attempted to load SP1 and failed. I get this error when attempting to run various application programs.
Also, dont know if related, I occassionally get a "Consent UI for administrative applications stopped workding and was closed" message
This is a new laptop that has been running Windows Updates automatically over a 4 month period.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
