Question : WSUS 3.0 SP2 - Specify intranet Microsoft update service location
|
|
Wondering if anyone knows whether it is possible to have the WSUS Group Policy setting of "Set the intranet update service for detecting updates" set to enabled and point the clients to the internal WSUS server to update their statistics (e.g. failed, successful updates, etc.) but still pull their updates from the Microsoft Updates site.
Also not sure what that Microsoft Updates site target address would be in such a situation.
E.G. Specify intranet Microsoft update service location: (this setting would actually point out to http://microsoftupdates.com (or whatever the actual address is)
Set the intranet statistics server: (this would be the internal WSUS server - http://VWSUS01 for example).
The goal is to be able to track\control the update settings of workstations in a remote office using a single WSUS server. Pulling the updates over the WAN is not an option.
Thanks,
Chris

Answer : WSUS 3.0 SP2 - Specify intranet Microsoft update service location

Keep your clients pointing to your WSUS server in both options, but on the server under the synchronization options you will need to deselect store updates locally.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/updatemanagement/bb245839.aspx
If you choose to store the update files on Microsoft Update, then your WSUS server obtains only update information (metadata) for the criteria you have specified on the Synchronization Options page. In this scenario, the update files come directly from Microsoft Update and are downloaded at the time of installation on the client computers receiving updates. You will need to make sure your client computers have direct access to Microsoft Update in this scenario.
