Can you start a VB6 program from Access and have that program return a value to Access?

Sure.  The Shell function will open any application.

If you have the source code for the VB6 app, you could write a function in it that connects back to the Access app, and writes a value into a table.

Also, EE assumes that you're asking a specific technical question as opposed to a 'here's my work, figure out how to do x' scenario.
