Question : Move Mailboxes/Public Folders from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010

Hi Everyone,

I did a little searching on the site, but I didn't see anyone with my exact scenario, so I thought I'd ask.

Our current implementation is as follows:

1. We have an Exchange 2003 server in our "old domain"/organization (olddomain.local)
2. I've configured a new DC and a new Exchange 2010 server in our "new domain"/organization (newdomain.org).

I've already migrated the users from the old domain to the new domain while preserving their SIDs, using the admt by establishing a two-way trust between the two domains.

I'm now ready to migrate the mailboxes and public folders from the Exchange 2003 server to the Exchange 2010 server. What is the best practice to do this?

I've read on MS's site that you can use the mailbox move procedure if their withing the same organization, but they're not.

Also, since my organization jumped the gun on using the new domain for e-mail, is there a way I can simultaneously run both servers, or do I have to do a direct cut-over after mailbox and public folder migration? What I mean is that the 2003 server accepts e-mail for recipients in olddomain and newdomain (i believe it was configured for two namespaces), while the new server is going to accept e-mail for just newdomain.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks so much!

Answer : Move Mailboxes/Public Folders from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010

You will need to configure a shared namespace.

Also as they are in different orgs you will have to exmerge the mailboxes out of 2003 and then import them into 2010.

Brick level backup of 2003: http://www.petri.co.il/brick_level_backup_of_mailboxes_by_using_exmerge.htm

import-mailbox: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb629586.aspx
