Question : Xp Boot Problem After Using Registry Cleaner, Recovery Options?
|
|
Hello all.
This does not seem to be my year w/XP, maybe I should really switch to Linux.
Anyway here is the deal.
Working on a friends pc that I loaded a copy of XP Pro for her several months ago. She is/was having problems with opening files and recognizing the cd-rom and cd-rw. Anyway I was trying to do a windows update and tells me everything is up to date. So then I try to use Norton System works to clean to clean up invalid shortcuts and the like. The program will not open so I unistall and then try to reinstall. This is when I noticed the cd-rom problem. Loaded new aspi files for the cd which did not work. Then unloaded and reloaded Nero. This allowed the pc to see the cd drives but they would not run the cd. When I would try to access the cd from the 'My Computer' window or try to explore the cd it would crash the window and I would have to use Task Manager to shut down the 'My Computer' window. So I used Uninstaller Pro to clean the registry thinking there might be a problem with registry links. It made a backup as it is suppose to.
So then I reboot and now I am getting this loop with a blue screen. I try to boot from the XP cd and get the following msg: CDBOOT:Memory Overflow error.
Also when rebooting w/out cd and I get caught in the loop I try using the "Go back to last known working config" it will start listing all the .sys files then stop at 'multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiion(1)\Windows\System32\Drivers\mup.sys'
So if anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciated well and truly. I have a file on the machine that I backed using Genie that I would like to recover if that is possible. If this is not an option she will have to live with that unfortunately but the main thing that I need to accomplish is getting the pc operational again.
Thank you, heatmizer

heatmiser101, Using System Restore in Windows XP
If the PC wont boot you can still run the restore procedure HOW TO: Start the System Restore Tool from a Command Prompt in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304449
But if you can get it to boot (try last known good configuration first)
If you had more than 200 Mb of free space when windows was installed, then the system restore process was set up by default.
Running the System Restore
1. Start >Programs >Accessories >System Tools >System Restore. 2. Click "The Restore my computer to an earlier time" 3. Click next.
********** If you have Problems
First see if the restore process is running.
Open a command window (start >run >cmd {enter}) Type net start {enter} to see if the service is running If its not 1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click "Performance and Maintenance". 2. Click Administrative Tools, click Computer Management, and then click Services and Applications. 3. Click Services, and then click System Restore Services. 4. This will tell you if the service is running.
If it isnt you can right click it and select start (look in the properties to ensure it isnt disabled)
********** What to do if it all goes wrong!
If you can boot into windows Start >Programs >Accessories >System Tools >System Restore. Click "Undo my last restoration". Click next. Click Ok to the screen message after the reboot. If you cant boot into windows When booting select the "Boot into Safe Mode" Option Follow the help screen and choose, "Undo my last restoration".
OR
Put the Windows CD in the drive Click Start >Run Copy and Paste the line below into the run box rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf
