Question : How do I determine if a server is or was a DC

I think one of my servers didn't get demoted properly and it is still a DC.  How do I determine which servers on my Domain are DC's?

Answer : How do I determine if a server is or was a DC

several ways to find your DCs

Open users and computers and right click on your domain and choose find
select computers
in the role select domain controllers and then select find

you can also use a tool from the support tools called nltest
nltest /dclist: FQDN of your domain

or use a script  http://blogs.technet.com/heyscriptingguy/archive/2004/12/16/how-can-i-get-a-list-of-all-the-domain-controllers-in-my-domain.aspx

...other ways too but those are three

You should no longer have a sysvol share on the box, no SRV records registered for it in DNS.

One thing to note is that even when you do a graceful demotion you still need to delete the DC manually from sites and services

Thanks

Mike
