Question : Strange Excel Error:  "Insufficient system resources"

One of our users is getting this error here:  http://www.songwave.com/excel-error.jpg

To get this error, she is simply opening a file-->browse to a folder on the network--->double click folder---->ERROR Appears

it doesn't happen all the time, but periodically.  It always happens when simply trying to open a folder in the FILE-->OPEN window.

its not a network connection/account issue.

can anyone offer some insight?
The computer is a brand new Dell Optiplex with 512MB Ram.  Her MSCONFIG shows no rogue programs starting up with windows.

Answer : Strange Excel Error:  "Insufficient system resources"

Hi bctek,

It sounds like you might have some Excel corruption. This is not uncommon (unfortunatly!)

There are several steps you can try to attempt to resole the problem:

1. In Excel, goto Tools -> Addins and uncheck all the boxes. Now try to recreate your problem. If the problem has gone you can try adding the addins one at a time to find out which one is causing the problem.

2. ***With Excel Closed*** Search your computer for all files with a .xlb extention. Rename all these files as *.xlb.old  Now try recreating your problem. If your problem has gone then you can try re-naming those files back one at a time to find the one with the problem.

3. ***With Excel Closed*** Search your computer for the XLSTART folder. Move all files in this folder to a different location. Now try recreating your problem. If your problem has gone then you can try moving files back one at a time to find the one with the problem.

4. ***With Excel Closed*** Click:
Start -> Run -> Excel.exe /unregserver
Start -> Run -> Excel.exe /regserver
You won't see anything happen on screen, but if you don't get an error then it was successful.
If a message appears on screen saying something like "Excel.exe file path not valid, please check the path and try again" then you need to put the full path to your Excel.exe file. This would mean you would have to do somthing like this, although you would have to check the path to your excel yourself:
Start -> Run -> "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /unregserver
Start -> Run -> "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver
OK, once you have done this then try to see if the problem is still there.

If all four of these steps fail, then you will be best trying a reinstall. However if you do this do not use the repair office option. Totally uninstall Office from Add/Remove programs, then do a full install. This will give you a better chance of success.

Hope something here helps.

Cheers!
MalicUK.
