Question : Windows 2008 Licensing question...

So our network is running Windows Server 2000 SP4, I was not around when it was purchased or setup. I've never legitimately purchased Windows server, only run illegal versions in my small home office. So I'm experienced with using Windows Server, but NOT with licensing issues....

I'm trying to purchase legit licenses to upgrade to 2003 (since to 2008 is not supported)... what do I need to buy for approximately 20 computers? One standard license and 3 CAL packs? And how much should a standard package cost versus a 5 user CAL pack? I've seen such varying things on the internet, I don't know what in the world to purchase. Makes a person want to pirate just for the simplicity of it, haha!

Help me go legit please!

Answer : Windows 2008 Licensing question...

Each Operating system on your network needs an OS Licensing.  General, this is done when you purchase your hardware.

For example, if you purchase a dell server and a dell workstation (with OS) each would come with a license of the OS.

So, when you buy your Windows 2003 Operating System, it will come with an operating system license.  However, I assume that you are going to create a domain....so you also need to own CAL's in order for you to legally use the client server networking capabilities.

To do this, you will need to buy a total of 20 CALS (if you have 20 users and 20 dekstops).
