Question : Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Install Issue

I have seen this question asked all over the Internet with no answers.

I am running XP SP3 with a working installation of VS 2008 and Office 2007 Pro Plus. I am trying to install TFS client on my machine but I understand I have to put VS 2008 SP1 on first. I have downloaded the file from MS, but the installation always bombs when it tries to install webdesignercore_kb950278.msp. I looked at my event viewer and received 3 errors during installation starting with the most recent:

Product: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 -- Error 2902.An internal error has occurred.  (ixfAssemblyCopy                  ) Contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) for assistance.

Product: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 - Update 'Hotfix for Office (KB950278)' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file c:\windows\temp\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1_20090924_065533439-Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007-MSP1.txt.

Product: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 -- Configuration failed.

EventType spinstaller, P1 microsoft visual studio 2008 sp1, P2 i, P3 1603, P4 microsoft visual studio 2008 sp1_webdesignercore_kb950278.msp, P5 e, P6 9.0.30703.1, P7 1, P8 9.0.30729 1033, P9 x86_winxp, P10 2902.

I checked out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895975 for the 2902 message and I have version 3.1.4001.5512 of Windows Installer. No Office programs were running during the install and I ran the Office 2007 repair wizard, but it froze. I'm going to reinstall Office, but since I found no answers on the Internet for this, I wanted to see if I could get an answer published.

Answer : Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Install Issue

1. If you install the patch webdesignercore_kb950278.msp related to visual studio, then how you manage to receive error 2902 from Office, and other errors from Office?

2. you may want to produce detailed log of the installation (patching), and look in the log, what is being attempted just before the error.

3. you may want to upgrade Installer itself to version 4.5; it's unlikely that it will help in this situation, but not impossible.

4. I would try to uninstall Office 2007, patch VS 2008, then reinstall Office 2007 (well, frankly, I would skip the last part, but it's subjective).
